LOLA

“Margherita, I dedicate this to you.” Saint points the microphone he’s holding at Daisy.

Everyone came back to the guys’ house, including most of the basketball players and a number of girls. Some of the guys and girls are in the kitchen playing beer pong, while the rest of us are in the living room doing karaoke.

“Locked Out of Heaven” by Bruno Mars appears on the flat screen TV mounted on the wall.

Saint tosses the microphone in the air and almost drops it but manages to catch it before it falls. “Hit it, Gabby!” he says, mimicking Jack Sparrow’s voice. He even walks like him, but that may just be because he’s drunk.

As soon as the music starts playing, Daisy sinks into the couch, hiding her face behind her red plastic cup. “Please don’t let him do this,” she pleads, eyes begging with desperation.

I stifle a laugh, looking away as she looks at me with a murderous glare, but her harsh stare is no match for Saint’s singing.

“Stop being dramatic. It’s not that…bad.”

I lied. It’s bad. He might be immensely good-looking, but his singing is horrible. Though no one cares because they’re all too drunk to care that he sounds terrible, and we all sound just as bad.

“The last thing I need is for anyone to think we’re sleeping together.” She hisses. “Do you not realize what this song means?”

TJ leans in, brushing his shoulder against mine. Invading my space again, like he has the past hour that we’ve been here. If he’s not touching my shoulder, then his leg is rubbing up against mine, and if he’s not doing that, then he’s twirling a lock of my hair around his finger like he’s doing now. His arm is draped along the back of the couch and a lock of my hair is laced around his finger.

It’s the alcohol and all pretend, I keep telling myself for what seems like the thousandth time.

“It could be worse.” He smiles, amused by the look of horror on her face. “Oh, come on, what’s better than Jack Sparrow serenading you?”

“Fuck you, Theodore,” she says in the most patronizing way, plastering a big smile on her face.

“Oh, come one, it could’ve been Shark Boy singing to you.”

Jagger dressed up as Shark boy to match with Gabby, who dressed as Lava girl. His rendition of the lullaby that Shark boy sings in the movie is probably the most iconic and comical thing I’ve seen all night.

“You know I liked senior week TJ better.”

“But you didn’t know me. I’m pretty sure we said about two words to each other.”

“Exactly.” Daisy’s face softens, her smile becoming genuine as she leans back on the couch, chugging half of whatever’s in her cup. “I guess it’s one song, but we never speak of this again.”

“She’s a ray of sunshine,” TJ sarcastically retorts.

“I’m in a really good mood, so I’m going to pretend I didn’t hear that, but call me sunshine again and I’ll stab you with my heel.”

“And she means it.
